Tekstmarkt, a first of its kind scriptwriting initiative between the Netherlands and South Africa, encourages creative writing with the new scriptwriting incubator. Playwrights and scriptwriters from the Netherlands and South Africa, both emerging and established, are invited to participate in the project to tell their stories, whether through the stage or in film. Participants will be chosen by an independent panel from both countries and will be mentored to develop their script ideas. The deadline for proposals is 27 September 2021.
Tekstmarkt is supported by the Performing Arts Fund NL, the Klein Karoo National Arts Festival (KKNK), the Embassy of the Netherlands in South Africa, DutchCulture and the Netherlands Film Fund. The project not only focuses on creative skills and new scripts for theatre and short films, but also encourages a cultural exchange between the Netherlands and South Africa.

Theme: the other / die ander / de ander

The theme for the first Tekstmarkt is the other / die ander / de ander, encouraging participants to explore perceptions of religion, gender, race, politics, belief systems, and culture. Who is 'the other'? How do we engage and embrace the other and enhance their and our experience of the world together?

Unique opportunity for playwrights and scriptwriters

Playwrights will be guided through mentorship phases, and at least two writers, one from each country, will receive final mentorship and a script development grant to develop the full script. The final theatre scripts will be presented as play readings to a panel of possible producers for theatres and festivals. Scriptwriters will ultimately be able to pitch their script idea to industry professionals for possible investment and development.

Submit your script or screenplay idea

Playwrights and scriptwriters are invited to submit their script or screenplay idea by 27 September 2021. The proposals will be evaluated by an independent panel with representatives from both countries. Selected candidates will be notified two weeks after the deadline for submissions.

For information about the Tekstmarkt programme and the full submission details, visit the KKNK website.

Online thinktank sessions

Tekstmarkt also organises a series of talks and discussions that explores the project's theme with activists, journalists, social workers, and academics from the Netherlands and South Africa. The thinktank — a five-day programme presented via Zoom — discusses subject matters such as gender identity, cultural identity, religious identity, political systems and socio-economic realities, with the aim to stimulate and challenge the participants’ perceptions and thinking.
The thinktank takes place from 13-17 September 2021. Participation is free. Attendance of these sessions is not a prerequisite for participation in the Tekstmarkt scriptwriting project, but it does give a general introduction to the project's theme. For more information about the thinktank programme and the registration form, visit the KKNK website.
